Have Justice Will Travel, Inc. (HJWT) is an innovative, mobile, multi-service legal model that assists rural victims of domestic violence by providing free legal representation for its clients and by connecting its clients with the appropriate social services.
In the following story, the Legal Empowerment Assistance Program (LEAP), a Have Justice Will Travel, Inc. program that provides legal assistance to the many disadvantaged Vermonters that call HJWT in need of an attorney, but whose cases HJWT is unable to complete from beginning to end, provided support and direction to a Vermont woman. LEAP connected her to the help she needed from Legal Aid.
Story provided by Robin Goodrum, Legal Intern
A client in her mid-50’s with Parkinson’s disease walked into the office of Have Justice Will Travel legal intern Robin Goodrum with a swollen face and bruises on her arms. Ms. Goodrum sprang into action.
This client had recently fled her abusive husband of sixteen years and was staying with a family member in southern Vermont. With her divorce pending out-of-state, Robin Goodrum realized the woman should consult with a Legal Aid lawyer there. Now a family law attorney is handling the divorce and the client’s case is moving forward.
Vermont Bar Foundation grants to Have Justice Will Travel, Inc. have, over the years, resulted in Vermont being one step closer to justice for all.
